I'm Paul Hardt. I'm a motion designer, animator, video producer, photographer, illustrator, and visual artist based in Southern California.
I've spent my career moving between design, technology, photography, animation, and video. I like figuring out how things work, and then finding the clearest, most interesting way to communicate them visually.

Paul Hardt
My bread and butter is motion design, animation, video, photography, illustration, and 3D. I've spent years handling projects from concept through final delivery: researching, writing, storyboarding, designing, filming, animating, editing, and finishing.
That range is useful when a project doesn't fit neatly into one category. Sometimes the right solution is animation. Sometimes it's live action, photography, 3D, illustration, or some combination of all of them.
I started Orange Pants to build a small, independent studio where I can work directly with interesting people on thoughtful projects, without unnecessary layers between an idea and the person making it.
Creative work. Measurable results.
Good looking work is only part of the job. It also needs to communicate, teach, persuade, and get people to pay attention.
How I Work.
Understand
Research the subject, audience, goals, and constraints.
Find the story
Develop the concept, narrative, visual approach, and script.
Make it
Design, animate, film, photograph, illustrate, or build the necessary assets.
Finish
Edit, sound design, refine, deliver, and prepare for distribution.
Direct communication
One person responsible for the creative and production. For larger projects, I bring in trusted collaborators while keeping communication direct and the creative direction consistent.
Why Orange Pants?
The name comes from my cat, Orange Cat. He’s fierce, cool, and a survivor. Orange Pants seemed like an appropriate name for a creative studio.
Curious by nature.
I'm interested in a lot of things: art and design, science and technology, biology, physics, the natural world, and the strange intersection of all of them.
My background also extends beyond commercial production. I'm an art historian, painter, and fine art photographer, with experience in galleries, publishing, traditional media, and physical fabrication. I founded and ran P Design Gallery in Denver, an award winning independent design gallery that worked with designers including Tord Boontje, Marcel Wanders, Jason Miller, and Tobias Wong.
My studio practice continues beyond the screen through painting, photography, printmaking, woodworking, metalworking, and other physical media.
