Customer Case Study
How do you tell a sophisticated technical story without making it feel like a technical presentation?
Customer Case Study - Windland
Where Wind Meets Technology.
For this customer case study, I traveled to Tehachapi, California, to document how Windland modernized its wind energy equipment using Opto 22 hardware and software. The story needed to speak to an audience that already understood industrial automation and renewable energy—so the challenge wasn't simply explaining the technology, but making the story technically credible, visually compelling, and easy to follow.
Before the shoot, I researched wind-farm automation and the role of California's grid operator, CAISO, in regulating wind power. That background informed the questions, structure, and edit, allowing me to shape the story around the real technical challenges rather than simply producing a customer testimonial.
Just because it is technical doesn’t mean it can’t be pretty.
I directed and shot the production, capturing cinematic footage of the wind farm and its equipment, then edited and sound-designed the finished piece. An Opto 22 salesperson served as the off-camera interviewer and customer liaison while I handled the visual and editorial direction.
In addition to the video, Opto 22 needed a large number of still photographs to promote the case study in social media and print. The dramatic skies over Tehachapi were cooperating—and my background as a landscape photographer came in handy.
A number of the photographs I took during the shoot were featured in trade magazines.
